2Baba Career

He moved to Lagos and began performing with Blackface Naija, a Benue singer. During his time in secondary school, he met Blackface. He went on to form the trio band Plantashun Boiz with Blackface (Ahmedu Augustine Obiabo) and musician Faze (Chibuzor Orji).

Two successful albums were released by Plantashun Boiz: Before breaking up in 2004, they released Body and Soul (2000) and Sold Out (2003) on Nelson Brown’s Dove Records label. Relationships were strained for a considerable amount of time before the band disbanded and its members began their solo careers. The band reunited in 2007 to record Plan B, their third and final album, long after the breakup known as the “Faze vs. Tuface” row.

BlackFace made the claim numerous times that 2Baba was performing songs that he and BlackFace co-wrote without paying him for them. The matter was finally settled amicably after a lengthy legal and media dispute. After Plantashun Boyz broke up in 2004, each member went off to pursue their own musical careers. 2Baba released his first solo album, Face 2 Face, in 2004. Numerous publications have ranked it as the best solo debut album by a Nigerian artist of the 21st century. The album produced hits like “Nfana Ibaga,” “Ole,” and “African Queen,” which was used as the soundtrack to the 2006 Hollywood film Phat Girlz. It was billed as one of the biggest hits from Africa.
