Bryant Gumbel Biography

Bryant Gumbel is a famous American television journalist and sportscaster. He is best known for co-hosting NBC’s Today show for 15 years. He was born on September 29, 1948, and is the younger brother of sportscaster Greg Gumbel.

Since 1995, Gumbel has hosted HBO’s investigative series, Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. This show has been rated as the best sports program on TV by the Los Angeles Times. In 2012, it won a Peabody Award.

Gumbel started his career with NBC Sports in 1975 as a co-host of its National Football League pre-game show GrandStand with Jack Buck. He hosted many sporting events for NBC, including Major League Baseball, college basketball, and the National Football League.

In 1982, NBC News made Gumbel the principal anchor of Today. He broadcasted from many places around the world, including Vietnam, Vatican City, Europe, South America, and much of the United States. Gumbel won several Emmys for his work on Today and had a large fanbase. He stepped down from the show in 1997 after 15 years.

Gumbel then moved to CBS, where he hosted various shows before becoming co-host of the network’s morning show, The Early Show, in 1999. On September 11, 2001, Gumbel was hosting The Early Show when he was the first to announce the September 11 attacks to CBS viewers. He left CBS and The Early Show on May 17, 2002.

Bryant’s first responsibility was to contribute features to the project twice a week. After 15 prosperous years on The Today Show, he returned to CBS to host the ‘Public Eye with the brand Bryant Gumbel’ show. Other prosperous works followed suit over the years such as commentary contribution on the NFL games and ‘The Early Show’, HBO’s ‘Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel’.

Later, he joined CBS’ ”The Early Show” and served as a co-host. He left the show on May 17, 2002. He as well as appeared on the NBC sitcom Seinfeld and interviewed Jerry Seinfeld on Today. Besides, he talked about his illness with Regis Philbin on Live with Kelly and Regis.
