Deen Castronovo is an American drummer and singer best known for his work with Journey, as well as hard rock acts Bad English and Hardline. He is currently the drummer and lead vocalist for the bands Journey, Generation Radio, and the Revolution Saints. He’s toured and recorded with Ozzy Osbourne, Steve Vai, Paul Rodgers, and Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler’s GZR.

Deen Castronovo Journey
Along with Schon, Castronovo continued to play in a variety of bands, including Hardline and Paul Rodgers. He spent three years with Vasco Rossi before joining Journey, where he worked as the drummer, backing vocalist, and occasionally lead singer for five albums over the next 18 years.
Castronovo is Journey’s longest-serving drummer, despite not being the original drummer. He has played on the albums Arrival (2001), Red 13 (2002), Generations (2005), Revelation (2008), Eclipse (2011), and Freedom.
He sang “Still They Ride,” “Mother, Father,” and “Keep On Runnin'” in concert to give the main lead vocalists a break. He also occasionally sang “Faithfully” and “Where Were You.” He sang lead vocals in the studio for Generations’ “A Better Life,” Freedom’s “After Glow,” and Generations’ “Never Too Late.”
After being arrested for domestic violence in June 2015, Castronovo was fired from Journey in August 2015. On the band’s tour in 2015, he was replaced by Omar Hakim, and longtime drummer Steve Smith later joined the band.
Schon confirmed Castronovo’s return to Journey alongside Narada Michael Walden as a second drummer in July 2021. After Walden left the band in 2022, he was once more the only drummer, though they both still appear on Freedom. He went on the “Journey Through Time” tour in 2019 with guitarist Neal Schon. On this tour, former Journey members performed songs from the band’s entire discography, including some that were no longer performed by the official Journey. He performed as the drummer and joined keyboardist Gregg Rolie on lead vocals.

Castronovo was the drummer for the bands GZR, Ozzy Osbourne, Bad English, Wild Dogs, and Hardline. He currently contributes lead vocals to Generation Radio, Revolution Saints, and Journey while also playing drums. Jeff Mark, Danny Kurth, Matt McCourt, and Pete Holmes formed the American rock band Wild Dogs in Portland, Oregon, in 1981. Jaime St. James took Pete Holmes’ place as drummer after Black ‘n Blue lured him away. St. James left the band to join Black ‘n Blue before a full album could be recorded with Shrapnel Records. The band made an appearance on a compilation series. Deen was first discovered by McCourt at this point, who recruited Castronovo, a 16-year-old local drummer, to join the band.
When Castronovo was 16 years old, he played his first big show with the band The Enemy, which opened for bands like Blue Oyster Cult and Foghat. He has performed in Cacophony, Dr. Mastermind, Planet Us, Social Distortion, and GZR (formed by Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler), as well as in backing bands for Vasco Rossi, Paul Rodgers, and Matthew Ward. Planet Us was a short-lived supergroup that included Neal Schon, Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, and Joe Satriani.

Deen Castronovo Arrest
After allegedly assaulting a woman, Castronovo was taken into custody on June 14, 2015, and he was charged with fourth-degree assault and menacing. Consequently, he was immediately dropped from future Journey performances and eventually replaced on the band’s 2015 tour by Omar Hakim. Castronovo was indicted on felony charges of rape, assault, sexual abuse, unlawful use of a dangerous weapon, and contempt of court (violation of bail terms following the arrest on June 14) on June 29, 2015. Castronovo received a suspended sentence of four years of probation and a guilty plea to five misdemeanor charges of domestic violence as part of a plea bargain.
Deen Castronovo Generation Radio
Castronovo joined Generation Radio, a supergroup, in 2020. He sings lead vocals alongside Rascal Flatts’ Jay DeMarcus, Chicago’s Jason Scheff, Chris Rodriguez, and Tom Yankton, who also play drums. On October 28, 2020, the band gave their first live performance in Nashville, Tennessee. The ACM Lifting Lives COVID Relief Fund received the entirety of the concert’s earnings. On August 12, 2022, the group released its debut album.
