Francis Chan Biography

Francis Chan is an American Protestant author, teacher, and preacher in evangelical churches and related settings.

He is the former teaching pastor of the Simi Valley, California, Cornerstone Community Church, which he founded in 1994. He also founded Eternity Bible College in 2004, served until 2010 as its early chancellor, and has been a member of the board of many organizations for Christian and social justice, including the Children’s Hunger Fund and the Gospel for Asia.

Chan is the son of immigrants Pak-sum Chan, a former minister at the Leighton Road Baptist Church in Hong Kong, and Wan-bing Mui, a Bible woman of the Hong Kong Baptist Church, Caine Road. He was their third and last child, his mother died during his childbirth, due to excessive bleeding. He has two siblings; his sister Grace Chan and his brother Paul Chan. He was named for the city of his birth and of the tragedy.

Chan was sent to Hong Kong to be raised for many years by a Buddhist grandmother. His father married Amy Law during this time and gave Francis a half-sister, Gloria. His stepmother, Amy Chan, died in an automobile accident in 1976 when Chan was eight years old. His father then remarried Josephine Leung again, who “lovingly raised [the] four children with Godly influence.”

His father and new stepmother had family support from the younger sister of his father and her husband, Marion and William Wong, along with a large extended family and church family in raising the four. He did not get along well with his father growing up but says that he was helped to recognize a degree of fear of God by his fear of his father. He also claimed that he did not understand God’s love well until he himself became a father. He lost his father to cancer in 1979 when Francis was twelve years old.

As a student in high school and then junior college. In Christian youth groups, Chan was active, which helped to grow his faith in Christ and his interest in ministry. Chan graduated from high school and graduated from Master’s College with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Divinity degree from the Master’s Seminary.

Cornerstone Community Church was founded in 1994 by Chan, his wife Lisa, and 30 others; within two months, the church had expanded to 100 members. The church continued to see growth in attendance, and in support of a 1,600-member congregation, it had gained approval from local authorities by the year 2000 for building expansion to double its capacity. As of January 2008, in Ventura County, California, Cornerstone was one of the largest churches.

Chan distributes about 50 percent of his profits, does not take a salary from his church, and has contributed to various causes most of his book royalties, amounting to about $2,000,000. It all goes to groups in foreign countries that rescue sex slaves. In addition, it was announced in 2008 that Cornerstone would give away 55 percent of its sales to charitable causes.

In 2004, Chan began Eternity Bible College as a Cornerstone Community Church ministry, with 100 students. Eternity launched an overseas program in Ecuador in 2008. The college had 47 graduates working in different parts of the world as of 2009.  Chan confirmed to his congregation on Sunday, April 18, 2010, that he felt called to resign at Cornerstone in Simi Valley.
