Gavin Esler Biography

Gavin Esler is a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and television presenter from the UK, and since 2003, he was the chief presenter from the BBC’s flagship political program, Newsnight, and presenter of BBC News at Five for BBC News Channel. He served as the University of Kent chancellor since 2014.

Esler started his education at Duddingston Primary School before gaining a scholarship to George Heriot’s School at the age of seven.

Esler was the first in his family to attend university in 1974, graduating with a BA in English and American literature at the University of Kent. He also wrote for the University journal, Incant, in addition to his studies. He then obtained an MA from the University of Leeds in Anglo-Irish literature with distinction.

He joined the BBC as a reporter for Northern Ireland in 1977, worked under Bernard Cornwell and extended his job after joining Newsnight in 1982. In 1989, Esler was appointed Washington correspondent and then, a year later, became North America ‘s chief correspondent for the BBC. Based in Washington, Esler ‘s duties now extended to influencing the coverage of the company in North America, which included reporting on both the prior administrations of George H. W. Bush and Clinton. Esler has also reported in Europe, Russia , China and North and South America for news and documentary programmes.

He joined Newsnight in January 2003, replacing Jeremy Vine, who had left to take over on Radio 2 from Sir Jimmy Young. Esler interviewed heads of state and government, including Bill Clinton, Jacques Chirac, and King Abdullah II of Jordan, during his career.

On Newsnight, Esler interviewed George Galloway in 2005 about the London bombings. Hundreds of concerns about his interview were recorded to the BBC, claiming that his questioning was “rude and violent.” Newsnight editor Peter Barron defended Galloway’s methods in questioning:

Until 2017, Esler was Dateline London ‘s main host on most Sunday mornings at 11 am on BBC News and BBC World News. He also hosted BBC News at Five on Fridays on the BBC News channel between 2008 and 2017, and when Huw Edwards was abroad. Esler, along with fellow Scottish presenter Anne MacKenzie, also presented the BBC Radio 4 factual series Four Corners. On Saturdays and Sundays he had a daily slot, working in BBC Country, BBC News and BBC One, and co-presenting the monthly Film Review with Mark Kermode.

Esler announced via his Twitter profile on 11 March 2017 that he would leave the BBC to focus on his writing activities. Other presenters launched the Film Critique, while he continued to present Dateline London. He was back at Five and Film Review on 31 March 2017 to deliver his last BBC News. As host of Talking Books, he returned to the BBC later that year.

During the first weeks of his birth, Esler suffered from a condition that made him unable to digest milk and his parents feared for his life. He had an operation at just three weeks old.

  • A study by Esler on the military build-up in the Aleutian Islands as part of the Latest Naval Policy of the Reagan administration won him a Royal Television Society award.
  • He received a Sony Gold Award in 2007 for his Guantanamo radio documentary study Letters on Sami al-Hajj, one of the Guantanamo Bay detainees. Al-Hajj was released from US custody after the broadcast.
  • The University of Kent awarded Esler two honorary degrees: an honorary MA was awarded in 1995, followed in 2005 by an honorary doctorate in civil law. In July 2014 he was elected as the university’s sixth Chancellor.
