 Controversies

While a Red Eye segment aired on March 17, 2009, Greg and his panel discussed Canadian Lieutenant General Andrew Leslie’s statement that the Canadian Armed Forces would benefit from a year-long “synchronized break.” following the conclusion of Canada’s counterinsurgency operation in Afghanistan in 2011.

“Meaning, the Canadian military wants to take a breather to do some yoga, paint landscapes, run on the beach in gorgeous white Capri pants.” The comedian panelist Doug Benson added: “I didn’t even know they were in the war…. I thought that’s where you go if you don’t want to fight. Go chill in Canada.”Gutfeld added: “Isn’t this the perfect time to invade this ridiculous country? They have no army!

Canadian Defense Minister Peter MacKay recognized that the comments attributed to the Canadian Troops, were “despicable, hurtful, and ignorant.” Fox, nevertheless, Gutfeld, believes that the program is “knowingly satirical and irreverent.” However, Greg went ahead and offered an apology saying;

“The March 17 episode of Red Eye included a segment discussing Canada’s plan for a ‘synchronized break,’ which was in no way an attempt to make light of troop efforts. However, I realize that my words may have been misunderstood. It was not my intent to disrespect the brave men, women, and families of the Canadian military, and for that, I apologize.”

The conflict in Ukraine has been a source of tension between Russia and the West for several years. In 2022, this tension reached a breaking point when Russia invaded Ukraine. This invasion sparked outrage across the world, but especially from Fox News host Greg Gutfeld. During an episode of his show, Gutfeld accused the media of emotionally manipulating viewers with their coverage of the conflict in Ukraine.

Gutfeld argued that news outlets were utilizing footage from the conflict to evoke an emotional reaction from viewers rather than provide them with objective information about what was going on in Ukraine.

However, Benjamin Hall, Fox News’ foreign affairs reporter located in Kyiv, condemned Gutfeld’s statement:

“This is not the media trying to drum up some emotional response. This is absolutely what’s happening.”

A few days after that, Hall was seriously injured and Pierre Zakrzewski and a Ukrainian reporter unfortunately lost their lives due to an unexpected assault from the Russian army.
Gutfeld’s reputation was damaged further when his mother-in-law was aided in escaping Ukraine by two Fox News journalists; Steve Brannigan and Lucas Tomlinson.
