Harry Litman Biography
American attorney, professor of law, and political commentator Harry Litman. He served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General and U.S. Attorney in the past.
He runs the Talking Feds podcast and has contributed comments to print and broadcast news. He has served as an instructor at several law schools and public policy programs.
Litman worked as a legal assistant for Anthony Kennedy, Thurgood Marshall, and Abner Mikva. His areas of expertise in practice have included whistleblower law and false claims law.
During the 1988–1989 term, Litman worked as a law clerk for Justices Thurgood Marshall and Anthony Kennedy of the Supreme Court, as well as Abner Mikva of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
After serving as a clerk, Litman was appointed to the position of Assistant US Attorney for the Northern District of California.
He served as Janet Reno’s deputy assistant attorney general in the Department of Justice from 1993 to 1998, managing the department’s work on a variety of topics and advising the attorney general and other officials on matters of prosecutorial policy and constitutional law.
He served as the Eastern District of Virginia’s Special Assistant U.S. Attorney at the same time. He served in that capacity as co-counsel for Operation Underhand, which involved bringing down a drug cartel that smuggled cocaine into jails while posing as a religious counselor.
He was chosen by President Bill Clinton to serve as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania in 1998. In 1999, Litman made the decision to drop the charges against the five cops implicated in the murder of Jonny Gammage.
