Mackenroth was the very first HIV Equal campaign spokesperson. The hope is that people will stop using the derogatory term “HIV” and stop treating HIV-positive people differently. In addition, he created the Prep Heroes Campaign prepheroes.org while working as the media strategist for Housing Works, a New York-based non-profit that fights the dual crisis of homelessness and HIV/AIDS. For four years, he served as a spokesperson for Merck Pharmaceuticals’ HIV Education Campaign, “Living Positive by Design.”

He was named 2015’s Wet Platinum Man of the Year in January 2016. He created the most recent media campaign, “HIV Shower Selfie Challenge,” which went viral and received over 26 million impressions in a week by using the hashtag #weareallclean.
