Mackenroth was the very first HIV Equal campaign spokesperson. The hope is that people will stop using the derogatory term “HIV” and stop treating HIV-positive people differently. In addition, he created the Prep Heroes Campaign prepheroes.org while working as the media strategist for Housing Works, a New York-based non-profit that fights the dual crisis of homelessness and HIV/AIDS. For four years, he served as a spokesperson for Merck Pharmaceuticals’ HIV Education Campaign, “Living Positive by Design.”
He was named 2015’s Wet Platinum Man of the Year in January 2016. He created the most recent media campaign, “HIV Shower Selfie Challenge,” which went viral and received over 26 million impressions in a week by using the hashtag #weareallclean. The campaign was covered by more than one hundred media outlets and was translated into eight languages.

Mackenroth made the move to New York City in 1991 to attend Parsons School of Design to study fashion design. Jack opened “Jack,” a men’s clothing store in the West Village of New York City, on Bleecker Street following Parsons. Mackenroth began working for Tommy Hilfiger in 1997 and later designed for the Levi’s Slates brand. From 2003 to 2007, he was the Plan Chief at Weatherproof Dynamic Wear. On October 15, 2008, Mackenroth disclosed a specially crafted wedding outfit created totally of condoms as a visual sign of the significance of more secure sex and right, steady condom use for San Francisco’s Venture Illuminate.

Mackenroth made appearances in a number of magazines throughout the 1990s as a fitness and fashion model, including Paper, DNR, Men’s Fitness, Men’s Journal, Men’s Health, Genre, Blue (Australia), and L’Uomo Vogue. Mackenroth was a competitive swimmer in elementary and high school, and even after graduating from college, he continued to compete at the Masters’s level. In the summer of 2006, Jack set a national record for the breaststroke leg of the 4 x 50-meter relay at the Master’s World Championships in Stanford, California. He has also won three All-American titles.
Mackenroth won a bronze medal in the 50-meter breaststroke at the Gay Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1990, his first time competing without a team. In each international competition since he has won at least one gold medal. His mother witnessed the 2006 Gay Games when his relay team set a national record. He participated in the Outgames in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2009, and the Gay Games in Cologne, Germany, in 2010, both of which he won seven medals for.
