James Garner (born April 7, 1928 – July 19, 2014) was an American actor who excelled in both film and television. He starred in many TV series over the course of his career, with his most popular roles including Brett Maverick in the 1950s western comedy series “Maverick” and Jim Rockford in the 1970s crime drama “The Rockford Files.” He has appeared in over 50 movies, including “The Great Escape” in 1963.

Jeff Garner met his friend, Paul Gregory at Hollywood High School and persuaded him to take a role in Broadway’s The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. Jeff was able to study Henry Fonda night after night.

TCM aired several of Garner’s movies in 2014 to celebrate his life. There was one particular anecdote about the time when Fonda helped Garner with his acting.

James Garner had a habit of keeping his eyes wide open while the corners of his mouth drooped slightly. Perhaps he would swallow once to make his point.

This fleeting image of discomfort can be understood and shared by all viewers. It doesn’t matter that Garner is tall, strong, and handsome like a movie star. The characters he portrayed were never masculine, they had a way with dukes and away with ladies, but thanks to his comic flair his heroism retained a human scale. He was one of them.

Garner met Lois Clark when President Adlai Stevenson was elected in 1956. They got married 14 days later, on August 17th August 1956.
