Javid Abdelmoneim is a British-born physician and TV host most well-known for his work with Médecins Sans Frontières, where he helped with crises in Iraq, Haiti, South Sudan, Sierra Leone, and Syria. Javid Abdelmoneim Doctors without Borders
As a medical student in his second year, Abdelmoneim joined Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and worked with the Access Campaign to make it easier to get medicines for neglected diseases. Since then, he has been a registrar in emergency medicine for the NHS Trust in London and has worked for MSF on a number of projects in a variety of roles.
Abdelmoneim most recently held the position of Member of the Board of Trustees from 2015 to 2021. He was also elected MSF UK’s youngest-ever president and chair of the Board from 2017 to 2021.
In 2009, he served as an emergency room doctor at Jumhuree Hospital on his first MSF mission to Basra, Iraq. In the lead-up to Iraq’s first general election in the spring of 2010, the focus of the work was to establish mass casualty procedures and provide training in advanced life support, trauma life support, and resuscitation. After the devastating earthquake of 2010, Abdelmoneim went to Haiti the following year and spent six months working as an emergency room doctor, treating trauma patients, and running the MSF hospital’s internal medicine and intensive care departments.
He joined MSF’s South Sudan-based team of flying doctors, nurses, and logisticians in 2014. Abdelmoneim and his colleagues would arrive at a remote location around noon and open at 8 a.m. the following day, depending on the weather. The team would have to hire and train local workers, build the clinic and a place to sleep, all in one afternoon.

Abdelmoneim completed a project later that same year in Kailahun, Sierra Leone, where he treated Ebola patients at an Ebola Management Centre. Abdelmoneim was a part of the critically acclaimed BBC One Panorama documentary “Ebola Frontline” while he was in Sierra Leone.
Abdelmoneim worked aboard the Aquarius (2016), a MSF-SOS Mediteranée partnership-operated search-and-rescue ship in 2016. He took care of the crew while they were at sea in the Mediterranean and gave them medical attention. Abdelmoneim traveled to Raqqa, Syria, in 2017, where he worked for a month in a MSF-established trauma clinic in one of the few remaining buildings in the city.
