Jim Gardner, born James Goldman, is a retired American news anchor who spent much of his career at ABC-affiliated station WPVI-TV in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Gardner was raised in a Reform Jewish household on the Upper East Side of New York City. His father, Joseph Goldman, was a professor and chairman of the ear, nose and throat department at Mount Sinai Medical Center, and his step-grandfather was noted Jewish rabbi Mordecai Kaplan. Gardner attended Ethical Culture Fieldston School before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Columbia University in 1970. While a student, he worked as a play-by-play announcer for football and basketball games and reported on the 1968 protests at Columbia University for the university’s radio station, WKCR-FM.

Gardner joined WPVI-TV on June 1st, 1976, and has never left his position. He has seen it all – big & small. Before joining WPVI-TV, he had previously worked at WKBW-TV in Buffalo. Gardner then went to various places. However, Gardner has served with various firms throughout his career.

From June 1, 1976, until December 21, 2022, Gardner worked for WPVI in Philadelphia. Initially, he was a reporter and noon anchor, and by November 1976, he was anchoring the 5:30 PM news. Gardner replaced Larry Kane and solo anchored the 6:00 PM weekday newscasts from May 11, 1977, to his retirement in December 2022. He also solo anchored the 11:00 PM weekday newscast from May 11, 1977, until January 11, 2022. Gardner has covered every Democratic and Republican presidential convention since 1980, interviewed every president and major presidential candidate from 1976, and traveled to the scene of breaking news worldwide.

On November 10, 2021, Gardner announced his plans to retire from broadcasting at the end of 2022. Prior to his retirement, he stepped down as the anchorman for Action News at 11:00 PM on January 11, 2022, and continued to anchor the 6:00 PM broadcast until his final broadcast on December 21, 2022.
