Brown went on to work for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in the future. Brown became Memphis’ first African-American prosecutor in 1978, and he later led the public defender’s office in Memphis. Before being elected as a judge on the State Criminal Court of Shelby County, Tennessee, in 1990, he would later establish his own law practice. He was known for his sometimes unusual sentences while he was on the bench, like ordering a drug dealer to apologize in a newspaper letter and forcing a child molester to confess to his church congregation.
When Brown presided over James Earl Ray’s final appeal of his conviction for the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., he was thrust into the national spotlight. Brown was removed from the reopened investigation into King’s murder due to alleged bias. Brown attracted the attention of the Judge Judy creators at this point.
Brown prevailed in the Democratic primary for Shelby County district attorney in March 2014. After making remarks about the sexuality of the Republican incumbent, Amy Weirich, he lost the general election by 65% to 35%. After being found in contempt of court in March 2014, Brown spent five days in Shelby County Jail in August 2015. When Brown was representing a woman in Shelby County Juvenile Court who was seeking child support, he reportedly raised his voice and interrupted a magistrate judge. Brown stated that he was unable to adequately defend himself as a result of health issues like type II diabetes, hypertension, and stress in response to a complaint about the contempt incident that was filed with the bar. The discipline case was put on hold indefinitely until Brown is healthy enough to face the complaint, and his law license was placed on the disability inactive list, preventing him from practicing law in Tennessee.
