Maran was approached by a woman who asked her for a modeling performance in San Francisco while she was still in high school, and a scouting agent encouraged her to pursue modeling professionally. In 1998, she appeared on the cover of Glamour. An appendectomy in 1990 left Maran with a visible scar, which is usually cropped out of photos.
