Maran was approached by a woman who asked her for a modeling performance in San Francisco while she was still in high school, and a scouting agent encouraged her to pursue modeling professionally. In 1998, she appeared on the cover of Glamour. An appendectomy in 1990 left Maran with a visible scar, which is usually cropped out of photos. Maran was signed by the Elite modeling agency in Los Angeles at the age of 17 and appeared on her first cover of Glamour magazine in 1998; she was then the featured Guess? Girl in their summer and fall 1998 campaigns. After appearing in over 25 commercials and advertisements, including a role as Howie D’s sidekick in the music video for Backstreet Boys’ hit “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back),”
