Joyce Anne DeWitt is an acclaimed U.S. actress, and a comedian, best known for her work on the show “Three’s Company” from 1977-1984. Prior to landing the role on the show, she also played Janet in The Ropers.
This is a biography of Joyce DeWitt. Her original birthplace, and where she spent the first ten years of her life, was Wheeling, West Virginia. Before Broadway and TV stardom, Joyce grew up in Speedway, Indiana. Speedway is a suburb of Indianapolis where she graduated from high school and once worked at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Ticket Office
Her mother is of Italian descent and her father is Dutch. She was active in speech & debate through the Indiana High School Forensic Association.
After graduating from Ball State University with a Bachelors in Theater, she moved to California and completed her Master’s degree from the University of California. She graduated in 1974.
DeWitt’s love for performing began early. Her undergraduate education included a degree from Ball State University and she also attended UCLA’s MFA program to pursue theater.
When she was in college, she worked as a secretary before her TV debut on an episode of Baretta. Rumors spread that she got mentored by actor Abe Vigoda, but they never met.
Dewitt is best known for her role in the TV show Three’s Company, in which she played Janet for 6 seasons. Prior to landing the role on the show, she also played Janet in The Ropers.
