Karen Bass is a political leader, social worker, and former certified medical assistant, who is serving as the 43rd mayor of Los Angeles since February 2022. A member of the Democratic Party, Bass had previously served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2011 to 2022, representing California’s 33rd congressional district from 2011 to 2013 and California’s 37th congressional district from 2013 to 2022. She was also a member of the California State Assembly from 2004 to 2010, serving her final term there as a speaker.
She had studied to be a physician, but that changed once she witnessed the impact of a crack epidemic in South Los Angeles. After she attended a conference she decides to organize a response. She and her community founded the community Coalition, which had a mission to transform the social and economic conditions of South Los Angeles.
In 2004 she was elected to represent California’s 47th Assembly district. At her inauguration, she was the only African -American woman serving in the state legislature. She was later on reflected in 2006 and 2008 before her term expired. She has served in Culver City, West Los Angeles, Westwood, Cheviot Hills Lemert Park, Baldwin Hills, and Crenshaw.
