I needed some guidance, professional advice on how to have this discussion, and it quickly sunk in. I also noticed quickly that I wasn’t alone. My producer told me that her 6-year-old wanted to know if, as he was afraid that he might give her the coronavirus, he could still give her a good night kiss.
As parents, at this extraordinary moment, we could all use a little support. When it comes to the health and well-being of my kids — our pediatrician, I began with the person I always go to first. The fewer words, always the stronger, “advised Dr. Bruce Brovender of Global Pediatrics.” “Always be frank, however.”
He said, “You potentially make it more frightening and painful because they don’t know what the truth is and what [it] isn’t,” if you’re not.
The advice given by Brovender inspired me to dig deeper. And after spending hours on the phone with physicians, experts, and specialists, while talking to our little ones about something so significant, I noticed some helpful common threads of dos and don’ts.
