Copeland is in hot water after an extensive Houston Chronicle investigation revealed that he has lived for years in a $7 million tax-free mega-mansion paid for by Texas taxpayers. On a private lake community outside of Fort Worth, the 85-year-old pastor’s house has six bedrooms, and six bathrooms, and is 18,000 square feet in size.
According to the Chronicle, the luxury pad, which serves as Copeland’s primary residence, is situated on one acre and is surrounded by a 24-acre lakefront tract that is valued “extraordinarily low” at $125,000. According to records, Copeland’s Eagle Mountain International Church, which he founded in 1967 and technically owns the house, pays less than $3,000 in property taxes each year due to the property’s low value. As part of a deal to settle disputes with the church, the Tarrant Appraisal District in Fort Worth agreed on the value. However, real estate professionals predicted that the waterfront property would fetch millions on the open market.
The mansion was eligible for a tax break of one hundred percent because Copeland claimed it to be a “clergy residence.” Copeland’s annual property tax would otherwise exceed $150,000 without the break. A 2011 report by the US Senate Finance Committee stated that the property, which was constructed in 1999, “has a sweeping spiral staircase and a bridge that spans across the living room and connects the two sides of the house,” as reported by the Chronicle. In addition, the mansion has two garages, a tennis court, and a covered boat dock with three slips on Eagle Lake.

The ministry claimed to own five aircraft in 2008, one of which is worth $17.5 million. The $3.6 million jet owned by Copeland was denied tax-exempt status in 2009, opening the door to an investigation into the church’s expenses; Copeland also withheld information regarding his directors’ compensation.

After attending Pastor Seminars led by Kenneth E. Hagin, Copeland and his wife Gloria established Kenneth Copeland Ministries (KCM) in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1967. “Jesus is Lord” serves as the ministry’s motto. “Brought over 122 million people to the Lord Jesus Christ,” he has stated in an interview, according to the ministry.
Kenneth Copeland Ministries is situated in Fort Worth, Texas, on a 33-acre (13-hectare) Tarrant Appraisal District property that was appraised for $554,160 in 2008 and will be worth $697,454 in 2021. The Eagle Mountain International Church, production facilities for television and radio, warehouses and distribution centers, residences for the Copeland family, and the Kenneth Copeland Airport are all on the site. KCM employs approximately 500 people. Prior to his divorce from Marty Copeland in 2017, Kenneth’s son John Copeland served as the ministry’s chief operating officer. He continues to advise the ministry.
Additionally, KCM owns a 2005 Cessna 750 Citation X, which it uses for international flights, and a 1998 Cessna 550 Citation Bravo, which it received from a donor in October 2007. They also bought a Gulfstream V in 2018 that Tyler Perry used to own. In addition, they are restoring a 1962 Beech H-18 Twin, which the ministry wants to use for disaster relief.
Copeland was accused of using his ministry’s Citation X for personal trips and friends in February 2007. The Internal Revenue Service holds the Copelands’ financial records and board of directors’ names in strict confidence, so neither are accessible to the general public. Copeland responded to questions from the media by pointing to what he claimed was a declaration made by an accounting firm that all jet travel complies with federal tax laws. Due to KCM’s refusal to submit a standard Texas Comptroller form that some county appraisal districts use to make determinations, which would have required making public the salary of all ministry staff, KCM’s Citation Bravo was denied tax exemption in December 2008. In January 2009, KCM filed a lawsuit with the Tarrant Appraisal District, and in March 2010, it received approval for its request to have the aircraft’s tax-exempt status restored.
The ministry of Kenneth Copeland has utilized the Federal Aviation Administration’s program to shield flights from tracking websites. The ministry owns five of these aircraft, including the aforementioned Cessna 750 Citation X and a North American T-28 Trojan. Some of these flights, including those with stops in Maui, Fiji, and Honolulu, have been questioned by Senator Chuck Grassley of the United States. The ministries claim that the stops were made to preach or give pilots time to rest.
