Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw is an American Academic, lawyer, civil rights advocate, and a leading scholar of critical race theory who developed the theory of intersectionality.
Furthermore, she is a full-time lecturer, specializing in race and gender problems, at the UCLA School of Law and Columbia Law School. Crenshaw is also the founder of the Centre for Intersectionality and Social Policy Studies (CISPS) and the African American Policy Forum (AAPF) of Columbia Law School, as well as the president of the Centre for Intersectional Justice (CIJ) based in Berlin.
Crenshaw is known for the emergence and growth of intersectionality, the theory of how social identities, particularly minority identities, overlap or converge, relate to processes and structures of inequality, dominance, or discrimination. As intersectional feminism has grown in recent years, so have the ways in which it is discussed. This woman’s work explored multiple elements of discrimination and was instrumental in analyzing how discrimination overlaps with sexism.
