Kane is most remembered in broadcast history for helping to catapult Action News at WPVI in Philadelphia to first place in the news ratings in one year, from 1970 to 1971, with some of the industry’s most inventive minds. The Action Reporting format, which emerged in the early 1970s and transformed current programming by emphasizing local reporting and outstanding community involvement by stations across the country, revolutionized current programming. His accomplishments landed him positions at ABC News and WABC TV in New York. Kane is the only news anchor who has spent 39 years at all three Philadelphia television stations.
Among his assignments were peace talks in the Middle East, the return of American hostages from Iran to Wiesbaden, West Germany, the devastating earthquake in Naples, Italy, the 1987 Superpower Summit between Reagan and Gorbachev, seven trips to the Middle East, and an in-depth interview with Solidarity Leader Lech Walesa in Poland. In 1985, he and his colleagues at WCAU TV were honored with the Alfred I. du Pont Award.
For their coverage of the battle between Philadelphia Police and the anarchist group MOVE, they received the DuPont-Columbia University Award. Kane broke the story of the ill-fated Bay of Pigs attacks in Cuba as a teenage radio news director in 1961, after months of establishing ties with the Miami-based Cuban exile underground.
