Laura Ling Biography
Laura Ling is a journalist and author and was a correspondent for Current TV and the vice president of its Vanguard Journalism Unit, which produced the Vanguard TV series. She was the host and reporter for E! Investigates, an E! Network documentary series. Ling joined Discovery Digital Networks as Director of Development in November 2014.

Laura Ling Detained
Somewhat recently of Walk 2009, North Korea reported that two American columnists were confined and would be prosecuted and gone after for wrongfully entering the country. On May 3, 2009, it was made public that Ling and fellow journalist Euna Lee had been detained after attempting to film refugees and defectors along China’s border. They received a 12-year labor prison sentence in June 2009 for unauthorized entry into North Korea and unspecified hostile acts.

She began her career as a producer at Channel One News and a correspondent for KCET’s SoCal Connected. She was a co-creator of the documentary series Breaking it Down, which aired on MTV from 1999 to 2001. After that, Ling got a job at Current TV, where she covered topics like shantytowns in Sao Paulo, Brazil, gangs and homeless youth in Los Angeles, underground churches in China, Cuba, Indonesia, the Philippines, Turkey, the West Bank, and the Amazon River. She had written about the Mexican drug war before she was taken into custody. How Africa is Hacking Its Energy Crisis was produced by Ling in collaboration with The ONE Campaign in 2015 and uploaded to the Seeker Stories YouTube channel. Laura Ling North Korea
The media often referred to it as a “show trial.” Before the women were released in August 2009, diplomatic efforts were made by the US government to oppose this sentence. Ling stated that her sister and Lee never intended to enter North Korea when they left the United States. She also said that her sister had an ulcer that needed to be treated by a doctor. Together with her sister Lisa, Ling co-wrote the 2010 memoir Somewhere Inside: The captivity of one sister in North Korea and the struggle of the other to free her.
During a particularly tense emergency that was already underway between North Korea and the United States, numerous individuals in South Korea and the United States have accused Ling and Lee of creating a diplomatic crisis with North Korea. In their memoirs, Ling and Lee addressed these allegations. A few common liberties activists in South Korea have blamed Lee and Ling for unnecessarily putting North Korean outcasts in peril by not being more cautious with their tapes and scratch pad in the occasion they were caught.
Various diplomatic envoys, including the Governor of New Mexico, Bill Richardson, former US President Jimmy Carter, US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, and former US President Bill Clinton, were considered in the efforts to negotiate Ling and Lee’s release. The latter was eventually accepted by the North Korean government as an envoy. Following an unannounced visit to North Korea by Bill Clinton on August 4, 2009, Ling and Lee were both granted pardons, and they were able to return to the United States.
