Mishal Husain is a British newsreader who works for BBC TV and BBC Radio. She is the primary BBC News Sunday presenter at Ten and BBC Weekend News and the main BBC Radio 4’s Today presenter. She has presented BBC Breakfast, Effect, and HARDtalk. Husain is a BBC News relief host at Six, as well.

When she was two years old, the family moved to the U.A.E. where her father worked as a doctor. Mishal was enrolled in the Abu Dhabi British Academy, and the parents were also in Saudi Arabia for a period.

Her first job came in 1996 at Bloomberg Television in London, where she was a producer and presenter at one time. Two years later, as a junior producer, she joined the BBC in the newsroom and for the News 24 channel in 1998, and then in the Economics and Business Unit. Within a few months, she stepped in front of the camera and has since worked in a number of roles: on the daily Breakfast Show, on the Singapore-based Asia Business Report, and as a presenter of business news on both BBC World News and the BBC News Channel.

Husain has been the Washington correspondent for the company since September 2002, serving as the main news anchor during the buildup to and during the Iraq invasion. She presented the last News at Ten on 17 March 2013 to be broadcast from BBC Television Centre. The BBC’s Director-General Lord Hall revealed on 16 July 2013 that in the autumn Husain would become a host of the BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. She continues to be the main host of BBC News’ Sunday evening editions at Ten on BBC One and sometimes on BBC World News and the BBC News Channel. On 7 October 2013 Husain announced her first edition of Today when John Humphrys was her co-presenter.

It was revealed on 7 November 2013 that Husain would be part of the BBCs Commonwealth Games Presenting squad. Husain received the 2015 London Press Club Award for Broadcaster of the Year.

In 2013 the Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi was interviewed by Husain. “Kyi lost her composure after a stressful interview” during the extreme cross-examination Suu Kyi was said to have been heard murmuring, “No one told me that a Muslim was going to interview me.”

She was criticized by the Daily Mail in 2017 after an appearance on the Today Program on Radio 4 with Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson at the time, and Husain’s moderation of a BBC election debate in Cambridge. Following the debate, the Mail branded her as a “speaker for [Labour Leader Jeremy] Corbyn” and called her a “lightweight success.” Her interview with Johnson was also stated in the critique. She had reported an interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on 27 November 2017.
