When he tied for second with Peter Oosterhuis at the 1982 Open Championship, despite holding a three-shot lead with six holes remaining, he was still relatively unknown. Price qualified for the PGA Tour by placing third at the 1982 PGA Tour Qualifying School. Price defeated Jack Nicklaus at the World Series of Golf by four shots in 1983, his first PGA Tour victory.
Price would not win again on the PGA Tour for almost another eight years after that victory. Price finished second to Seve Ballesteros at the 1988 Open Championship, despite shooting a course record of 63 at the 1986 Masters Tournament. Price was regarded as the best player in the world by the middle of the 1990s, and in 1994, in addition to winning his first major, the PGA Championship in 1992, he won the Open and the PGA Championship simultaneously. He spent 43 weeks at the top of the Official World Golf Rankings and topped the PGA Tour money list in 1993 and 1994, each time setting a new earnings record.
Price won the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit in the 1982/83 season, and if he had played in the required number of tournaments in 1996/97, he would have won again. Along with his good friend and contemporary Greg Norman, Price was one of the best ball strikers in the game during his early career and peak. In 1996, Norman tied Price’s Augusta National course record of 63.
Price, like fellow African Gary Player, has criticized the Ryder Cup, saying, “If you like root canals and hemorrhoids, you’d love it there.”, However, he has participated in the Presidents Cup five times.
