Nicky Walters, is the shining star of WOWK-TV. Hailing from the Appalachian mountains, this West Virginia native is a true-blue hillbilly at heart. Before she became a TV reporter, Nicky worked as a reporter/anchor for Metro News Radio, and co-hosted a morning talk show called “The Morning Brew”. No wonder she’s always on the go – she’s been brewing since morning!
Nicky joined WOWK-TV in 2005 as a full-time reporter, and boy, has she covered some memorable stories! In 2005, she and her colleague Ben Miles were at the Mason County Animal Shelter doing a story on its new heating system, when it suddenly exploded! Nicky got burnt, but she and Ben were not about to let the animals burn with them. They quickly turned into superheroes, putting down their cameras and microphones to save as many animals as they could. No wonder she’s such a champion for animal rights!
After Hurricane Katrina, Nicky joined the West Virginia National Guard in New Orleans and saw firsthand the destruction caused by the natural disaster. Being a “West Virginia Girl” herself, Nicky loves nothing more than meeting “real people” and telling their stories. She knows what it’s like to live, struggle, and thrive in the Wild and Wonderful State.
Nicky attended Marshall University and started her broadcast news career working for the campus radio station WMUL-FM. She earned several awards for her work there, including Best Feature Reporting and Best Radio Documentary. Under her leadership as News Director, WMUL-FM’s News Department also received an Honorable Mention Award for Best News Operation. Looks like she’s always been a star!
Nicky’s roots go way back – she grew up in Tornado, West Virginia, and went to Hayes Middle School and Nitro High School. Today, she lives in South Charleston with her rescue cats, and she’s also the proud owner of two Quarter Horses, Trigger and Star. Let’s hope she doesn’t mix up the names while reporting!
