Prior to joining CNN, she was a reporter for the BBC and for the South African Broadcasting Corporation in the Mandela era. In 2001 Curnow started reporting for CNN in London, covering the UK and Europe. She is now based in Atlanta, at CNN’s World headquarters. Before, Curnow was CNN’s anchor in Africa, based in Johannesburg, where she reported on a variety of stories, including the soccer World Cup, HIV/AIDS epidemic, political scandals involving South African President Jacob Zuma, and Boko Haram.
Curnow traveled to the continent extensively and reported on human rights violations and corruption from Zimbabwe. She led CNN’s coverage of Nelson Mandela’s ill health and death while based in South Africa, and broadcast live from his funeral. She had a long association with Mandela, and during and after his presidency, she interviewed him a number of times.
Her conversation with Mandela on his 90th birthday was the last interview he gave. Curnow also covered Oscar Pistorius before and after he was convicted of his girlfriend’s Murder, Reeva Steenkamp. Her reports featured exclusive footage and interviews with Pistorius and his inner circle.
In October 2016, as coalition forces launched the Mosul offensive in Iraq, she anchored the coverage, contributing to CNN’s nomination for a News and Documentary Emmy. Curnow also anchored CNN’s coverage of the collapse of the longtime leader of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe. He also reported and anchored rolling news hours with correspondents in and around Harare, for which CNN received the Royal Television Society Award for Best Coverage of Breaking News.
