Shawn Lanier East Columbus Post Office to reopen after nearly 3 months
Lanier COLUMBUS (WCMH) on 2nd September 2020 reported on the reopening of an east Columbus Post Office after being closed for nearly three months.
The United States Postal Services suspended its Mount Vernon Unit operations on June 12 due to the unfunctioning air conditioning unit, stating that it creates unsafe working conditions for employees and customers.
Now, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty says the air conditioner is fixed and working but going inside is still too hot. Shawn Lanier of NBC4 reported that the location could open again as soon as Saturday.
Residents in the area were confused as to why this location had so long been closed. They feared it wouldn’t reopen, and felt it was part of a larger scheme to suppress the vote in the area at a time when the Secretary of State urges the absentee to vote by post.
Other tenants say they have several times reached out to the property’s landlord, James Fogler, and have received no reply.
The City of Columbus has an active civil case against Fogler and Shiloh Grove Limited Partnership at the Mt. Vernon towers right next to this post office for existing code violations.
Beatty says enough is enough, and that this landlord needs something to happen. She is working on that right now.
“I call a meeting with the postmasters to look at the contracts and what they need, because I think it’s also negligence on their part. We need to ensure we in urban areas retain and maintain post offices and mailboxes, “Beatty said.
Beatty tries to see if there’s a way to break this landlord’s deal and allow someone to take care of it.
