He starred as Kunta Kinte and is most known for his role as an African slave in the American television series “Roots” (1977), as well as as a Lieutenant Commander in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1986–1994). He also acted as host of the educational series Reading Rainbow from 1983 to 2006 on PBS. Levar has received 12 Daytime Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award as Executive Producer of the show.

Levar was born in West Germany and raised in California. However, his mother was a social worker, administrator, and educator while his father was a photographer for the U.S. Army Signal Corps staff.

As a teenage boy, Burton had decided to become a Catholic priest. But, when he was 17 years old and had some questions about his vocation, he changed his mind and became an actor instead of pursuing the career of becoming a Catholic priest. Anyhow, Burton completed his freshman year at St. Pius X in Galt, California when he gained the starring role of Kunta Kinte in the 1977 film-TV adaptation of Roots.

In 1976, however, he made his acting debut in a film based on the short story “The Man Who Was Almost a Man” by Richard Wright. Alongside a Jamaican actress, Madge Sinclair. Mostly, Levar played the role of Almos’a Man – a small-time hustler who eventually becomes a successful entrepreneur.
