Baum participated as a contestant on the fifth and final season of Project Runway, which aired on Bravo TV and premiered in 2008. The models of each contestant went to Mood Fabrics and picked out the fabrics that the designers would use to make their outfits. Suede prevailed in this challenge, which was partially judged by Natalie Portman, an actress and guest judge. This dress was made and sold on Bluefly.com in over 250 pieces. After reaching the top five, Suede was eliminated, but it was brought back to exhibit a collection during New York Fashion Week.

Along with other designers, Baum presented his first collection of evening wear at the Cleveland Center of Contemporary Art. He worked for Rocawear Girls, Lee 1889, Jordache, Polo Jeans Company, and Todd Oldham Jeans, all well-known brands. Suede has also held positions at Vanity Fair Corporation, Old Navy, and Phillips Van Heusen. In 2001, he laid out the SUEDEsays Pundits grant at the Kent State College School of Style, granted every year to one senior fashioner graduate.
