Vera Songwe Biography

Vera Songwe is a Cameroonian economist and banking executive who has worked for the World Bank since 1998 and was appointed Regional Director for Western and Central Africa by the International Finance Corporation in 2015. She is the first woman to serve as Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

Vera Songwe Demission

At a virtual town meeting for ECA partners and employees, Songwe announced her resignation as Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and UN Under-Secretary-General. She expressed gratitude to the United Nations for its assistance in facilitating a deal between Russia and Ukraine to unblock grain exports from Black Sea ports and alleviate a global food crisis. Songwe has served as president of the continent’s leading economic think tank for the past five years. During that time, she has been in charge of a variety of issues, including the restructuring of the global financial architecture, the fight against the effects of the pandemic, and climate change in one of the world’s most affected regions.

Vera Songwe World Bank

Songwe joined the World Bank in 1998 and worked in the Poverty Reduction and Economic Management (PREM) unit, which covered Tunisia and Morocco. She took on a number of roles in the PREM unit for East Asia and the Pacific over the next few years. As part of the International Development Association (IDA) 16th replenishment in 2010, Songwe was a member of the World Bank Group team that raised a historic US$49.3 billion in concessional financing for low-income countries worldwide.
