Even though Tems was “happy” with her first recording of the song, she felt her verse could have been better after the song gained popularity. However, her vocals impressed Wizkid and his team so much that they decided to keep it. Tems recalled hearing the song in Los Angeles “in the most random places.”

Afrobeats, Afro-pop, and R&B combine in the song “Essence.” In a lyrical way, it shows Wizkid and Tems yearning for physical contact; The song has been called “flirtatious” and features “tongue-in-cheek showboating” by the artists. Sidney Madden of NPR noted that Tems sang in the chorus of the song, “You don’t need no other body,” about how only her lover can give her the feeling of “lust and obsession and worship that she deserves.” There is no need for another body.
