Akinwumi Adesina is a Nigerian economist and the President of the African Development Bank who served as the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development for Nigeria in the past. He served as the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) Vice President of Policy and Partnerships in 2010.

He was the university’s first student to receive this distinction. He continued his education at Purdue University in Indiana before marrying in Nigeria in 1984 for a brief time. He graduated from Purdue in 1988 with a Ph.D. in agricultural economics, where he was awarded the best Ph.D. thesis for his research.

Adesina was a senior economist at the West African Rice Development Association (WARDA) in Bouaké, Ivory Coast, from 1990 to 1995. Since receiving a fellowship as a senior scientist from the Rockefeller Foundation in 1988, he worked there. He served as the Foundation’s representative for the Southern African region from 1999 to 2003. He worked as an associate director for food security from 2003 to 2008.

From 2010 to 2015, Adesina served as the Agriculture Minister of Nigeria. Because of his work to reform Nigerian agriculture, Adesina was named African Man of the Year by Forbes. He made the fertiliser supply chain more transparent. Additionally, he stated that he would provide farmers with free mobile phones, but this proved to be too difficult. The absence of a mobile network in rural areas was one factor.

He was named one of 17 global leaders in 2010 by Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary General of the United Nations, to lead the Millennium Development Goals. Adesina was elected the African Development Bank’s presumptive president on May 28, 2015. On September 1, 2015, he officially took office.

Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations Secretary-General, appointed Adesina to the Lead Group of the Scaling Up Nutrition Movement in September 2016. He received the 2017 World Food Prize. Adesina was re-elected as President of the Africa Development Bank for a second, five-year term on August 27, 2020.
