Bennet Omalu Biography
While working at the Allegheny County Coroner’s Office in Pittsburgh, Bennet Omalu, a Nigerian and American physician, forensic pathologist, and neuropathologist, was the first to identify and report discoveries on chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in American football players.
He eventually rose to the position of chief medical examiner for San Joaquin County in California and is currently a professor in the medical pathology and laboratory medicine department at the University of California, Davis.
He presently serves as Bennet Omalu Pathology’s president and medical director. Based on his research results in the brain of former NFL player Terry Long, who battled depression and committed suicide in 2005, Omalu released a second Neurosurgery publication in November 2006.

While his mother was a seamstress, his father was an active member of the community and a civil mining engineer in Enugu-Ukwu. His last name Onyemalukwube, which means “he who knows, speaks,” is reduced to his family name Omalu.

The first person to locate and report information on Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) among American football players was Omalu. In 2002, he obtained it from former Pittsburgh Steelers player Mike Webster.
This came when he discovered significant tau protein buildups in Webster’s brain, which have a similar effect on mood, emotions, and executive functioning as beta-amyloid protein clumps have on Alzheimer’s disease.
He has collaborated on several studies with other academics and former NFL players including Terry Long, who battled depression and committed himself in 2005. There is evidence that links between football and CTE exist.
For his work on CTE, Omalu was given the Distinguished Service Award by the American Medical Association in 2016. Additionally, he has found CTE in the brains of 60 professional wrestlers, live individuals, NFL players, and veterans.
