Sliwa has been a radio telecaster for a considerable length of time, the vast majority of that time on WABC-AM, where he started his profession in 1990. Sliwa, who had been released by WABC, was hired by the city-owned and operated WNYC in 1994. Some, including Sliwa, have suggested that the newly elected Mayor Rudy Giuliani, whom he had supported in the 1993 mayoral race, granted him access to the station.

Sliwa established the “Magnificent 13” in May 1977, a civilian organization tasked with preventing crime and violence on the New York City Subway. The city was experiencing a spike in crime at the time. The Superb 13 developed and was renamed the Divine messengers in 1979. Both positive and negative reactions were strong to the group’s actions. Eighty percent of those who were members of the Guardian Angels were either black or Hispanic. Before the group could be deployed, all members had to complete karate training and meet the legal requirements for citizens’ arrest. A component of the Guardian Angels’ uniform is Sliwa’s red beret.
A critic of Sliwa and the organization, Mayor Ed Koch, conducted an investigation into the Guardian Angels, which “proved so positive that the Guardian Angels will soon be awarded some sort of official status,” according to The Washington Post. “[t]hey are a better expression of morality than our city deserves,” was one of the organization’s rare early advocates, according to former Lieutenant Governor Mario Cuomo.
Sliwa acknowledged in 1992 that he and The Guardian Angels staged heroic subway rescues for publicity purposes. He also admitted that he had made false claims that he had been kidnapped by three transit police officers who were not on duty.
He moved his business to Buffalo at the beginning of the 1980s, and he frequently criticized the policies and procedures of the local police. One incident involved Frank Melvin, a member of the Guardian Angels. In December 1981, Melvin was shot and killed by a Newark police officer after the officer claimed they mistook Melvin’s unzipping of his jacket to display the Guardian Angels emblem for a threat. Sliwa claimed that a white officer who was being protected by the police department, not the Hispanic officer who had been identified as the shooter, was responsible for Melvin’s murder, which was an African American. Both officers were cleared of any charges connected to Melvin’s death by an Essex County grand jury.

Sliwa and Frank Morano successfully launched a hostile takeover of the Reform Party of New York State in September 2016. During the elections in November of 2018, the party was unable to cast ballots. Sliwa said in an interview in December 2019 that he hated then-President Donald Trump and called him a “screwball and a crackpot.” Sliwa joined the Republican Party in February 2021, just a few weeks after Trump left office. On March 8, 2020, Sliwa made the announcement that he would be running as a Republican for mayor of New York City in 2021, with the goal of becoming the 110th mayor of New York City. Fernando Mateo and Sliwa became bitter rivals during the primary; Sliwa criticized Mateo for contributing to the Democrat Mayor Bill de Blasio’s 2017 re-election campaign, while Mateo was accused of breaking the law.
Sliwa and Mateo fought over their loyalty to former president Donald Trump during the campaign. According to the unofficial results, Sliwa won by 72 percent to 28%. Sliwa ran on a platform that prioritized fiscal restraint, increased opportunities for vocational training in charter schools, supported a property tax overhaul, opposed the defund the police movement, and maintained the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test.
He also supports making all animal shelters no-kill and opposes the killing of unwanted animals. During his campaign, he advocated starting a pilot program to see if a universal basic income was feasible.
