Hermela Aregawi is an Ethiopian-American broadcast journalist who has established herself as a passionate advocate for truthful journalism and a force for positive change. She is currently working as an independent journalist and is the founder of Mela Media, which provides news and analysis on issues affecting the African continent and the Ethiopian diaspora.
Before taking up her current roles, Hermela served as a general assignment reporter at CBS2/KCAL in Los Angeles. During her time there, she covered several high-profile stories, including the devastating Woolsey Fire and the tragic shooting at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks. Prior to that, she worked as a reporter, shooter, and editor at KRON-TV in San Francisco, where she produced award-winning reports on topics ranging from immigration to police brutality.

She moved to Los Angeles after reporting for more than two years in the Bay Area, covering major news including the Oakland warehouse fire that killed 36 people, and massive protests, including those in the aftermath of President Trump’s election that at times got violent, the devastating 2017 North Bay fires that killed dozens and scorched more than 200,000 acres.
Prior to returning to California, she was in New York City for three years serving as a correspondent and digital producer for Al Jazeera America where Hermela focused on an issue-centered feature from the pains of opioid addiction and recovery to the result of the rise of islamophobia on Muslim-American families in the New York City area.
Formerly, she was a presenter and segment producer for both Current Television and The Young Turks online in Los Angelos. Throughout her time at The Young Turks, she was part of the award-winning coverage of the 2012 Presidential Election. She began her broadcast career as a production assistant and associate producer with Judge Judy and Judge Joe Brown.
Aregawi eventually joined Al Jazeera America as a correspondent alongside Libby Casey. Al Jazeera was known as an American basic cable that was owned by the Al Jazeera Media Network.
