Joel Osteen is a Christian televangelist and the senior pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. He has been on television since 1999 and has written several books.
Osteen was born in Texas on March 15, 1963 to John Osteen and Dolores Osteen. He was raised by his parents along with his three siblings: Lisa, John Jr., and Rhonda.
His father was a traveling preacher who preached at various churches across the United States before settling down at Lakewood Church in 1959. Joel attended Humble high school and after graduating from high school, he attended Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Although he did not graduate, Osteen studied radio and TV communications. Also, he did not receive a degree from a divinity school.
In 1982, Joel returned to Houston and began a 17-year stint of producing Lakewood’s television program and his father’s televised sermons. In January 1999, he lost his father unexpectedly and that is when Osteen inherited the church.
