Peter Obi is a Nigerian politician and businessman who was governor of Anambra from March to November 2006, from February to May 2007, and from June 2007 to March 2014. After leaving the People’s Democratic Party in May 2022, he became the Labour Party’s candidate for president of Nigeria in the 2023 election.

Peter Obi Running Mate
Obi was chosen as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate for the People’s Democratic Party’s 2019 presidential campaign on October 12, 2018. Obi opposed proposals for a standardized national minimum wage as a vice presidential candidate, arguing that different states should have different minimum wages. Second was the Abubakar/Obi ticket.
Initially, Obi’s running mate was physician Doyin Okupe until a substantive candidate could be chosen. Media outlets reported that there was an effort to have former Kaduna State Senator Shehu Sani serve as Obi’s running mate prior to the final selection of a running mate. On July 8, 2022, Obi announced Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed as his running mate.

Peter Obi announced his intention to run for president of Nigeria under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party on March 24, 2022; however, he later announced that he would be running under the platform of the Labour Party instead. On May 24, Peter Obi wrote to the Peoples Democratic Party’s leadership to resign his membership, as reported by the Peoples Gazette. At the party’s presidential primary, Obi reportedly complained about massive bribery of delegates and vote buying, citing the existence of a party clique working against him.
Due to Obi’s business experience and his status as a major candidate who is not affiliated with either of Nigeria’s two main parties, comparisons have been drawn to Emmanuel Macron’s successful presidential campaign in France in 2017. Obi was one of the officials who welcomed Macron during his visit to Lagos and has expressed admiration for him.

The Premium Times reported on Obi’s involvement in tax havens like Barbados and the British Virgin Islands through leaks from the Pandora Papers. In the 1990s, Beauchamp Investments Limited, based in Barbados, and Next International (UK) Limited, based in the UK, appeared to be Obi’s shell companies. Both of these companies had ties to Obi and his family. This was before he held any Nigerian political office.
Further reporting revealed that Obi also hired Access International in 2010 to assist him in starting and running Gabriella Investments Limited, a British Virgin Islands business named after Obi’s daughter. Additionally, one of the directors was a director of a Belize-based shell company that received 50,000 shares from Gabriella Investments. Obi reorganized the business in 2017 under the name PMGG Investments Limited and established The Gabriella Settlement Trust, which became the company’s sole shareholder. At this point, Obi did not hold any political office.
According to a Premium Times report, Obi had violated a number of laws through his business dealings. First, the report said, Obi violated the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act by continuing to serve as a director of Next International (UK) Limited while he was governor of Anambra State. However, in an interview with Arise News, Obi stated that he resigned from all businesses prior to taking office as Governor of Anambra State, describing that claim as false and misleading. Second, it claimed that Obi had violated the Nigerian Constitution’s requirement that public officials declare all of their properties, assets, and liabilities by not declaring his offshore companies.

Social media, demonstrations, and street marches demonstrated the support of younger generations under the age of 30 for Obi. In her first presidential campaign endorsement, Aisha Yesufu, a well-known activist who was a supporter of the End SARS campaign and a cofounder of the #BringBackOurGirls movement, endorsed Obi.
Commentators have argued that the “biggest political movement in recent Nigerian history” is attributable to Obi’s third party candidacy, which appeals to young voters who are dissatisfied with the two major parties. “Obi has managed to transform his previously largely unknown Labour Party into a powerful third force in opposition to two political heavyweights with his core message of prudence and accountability.
Obi’s supporters organized a series of One Million Man Marches in several Nigerian cities before the official start of the campaigns, including Makurdi, Calabar, Lafia, Port Harcourt, Afikpo, Owerri, Enugu, Auchi, Abuja, Kano, Ilorin, Abakaliki, and Ibadan. The official campaigns did not include the marches; because they were led by volunteers who were supporters of Obi rather than Obi’s staff or political party.
