Andra Day, born as Cassandra Monique Batie is an American singer-songwriter and actress, best known for her single ‘Rise Up'” who launched her first album, “Cheers to the Fall” in 2015. On The View, she not only performed ‘Rise Up,’ but was also nominated for Daytime Emmy Award for her performance.
She also appeared in a commercial with Stevie Wonder and Apple TV in spring 2015. Jazz Joy and Roy Global Radio listeners picked Day to be one of their most-requested artists in 2020.
As you can see, Day is a renowned actress and singer. In this recent Oscar-nominated film, she portrayed Billie Holiday. Andra Day Early Life
Day was born on December 30, 1984, in Edmonds, Washington as Cassandra Monique Batie. Later, at the age of three, her family moved to Southern California where she lived in Southeast San Diego through her high school years.
She began singing at a young age with her family at the First United Methodist Church Chula Vista, California. Ms. Day began taking dance lessons at age five and continued into her 20s.
Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, & Dinah Washington are vocalists who Ella has credited with fostering her interest in jazz music. At age 12 she was introduced to their sounds and it led her to form a love of singing. All three were favorites of hers and influenced her music later on in life.
Day attended the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, graduating in 2003.
Andra Day Career
Day began her professional career at the age of 12 after being discovered by Stevie Wonder’s then-wife. She started working as a children’s entertainer and worked 20 other jobs before being signed by Stevie Wonder himself in 2010.
However Wonder and Day did not form any collaborations, but, the duo reconnected about a year later. Later, Wonder introduced Day to producer Adrian Gurvitz at that time. Adrian would eventually collaborate on Day’s debut album a few years later.
Day signed her development deal with Buskin’s Jeffrey Evans in November 2011 before asking him to be her manager in 2013. Later Day & Buskin earned a record deal with Warner Bros. Records because of the popularity of her YouTube videos that she recorded in her sister’s bedroom in San Diego.
She has written songs for artists like Jessie J, Eminem, and Muse among others, Andra made some notable remixes of famous songs to create new tracks that represented her unique style. She remixed the song “Big Poppa” by The Notorious B.I.G. with Marvin Gaye’s lyrics, creating “Poppa’s Prayer.” Next, she combined Amy Winehouse’s song “He Can Only Hold Her”
Day has performed at numerous events, including the 2015 BET Awards, the 2015 Special Olympics, Essence Music Festival, on U.S. TV shows, and many others. Simone performed “Mississippi Goddam” for the soundtrack of the Netflix documentary.
On August 28, She released her first studio album. Her first national tour happened in August & September with Lenny Kravitz.
On May 20, 2016, Day entered into an agreement with McDonald’s and Coca-Cola that resulted in her image on around 50 million cups at McDonald’s.
