King began her career in journalism as a production assistant at a television channel WJZ-TV which is in Baltimore in the US. It is at this Televisions station where King met her now friend Oprah Winfrey, who was working as a television anchor at WJZ station.

After working for some time as a production assistant King later trained as a reporter at WUSA-TV in Washington D.C. Gayle worked as at WJZ-TV for a period, but she decided to head to Kansas, Missouri where she worked as a weekend anchor and a reporter at WDAF-TV. In the early 80s, she moved to Hartford, Connecticut where she worked for a long time (18 years) as a television anchor at WFSB.

King’s first job in the journalism field was as a production assistant at the WJZ-TV station. One of her co-workers, Oprah Winfrey, had previously been an anchor for that TV channel.

After serving as a production assistant for a few years, King trained as the field correspondent at WUSA-TV in Washington D.C. Gayle worked at WJZ-TV for an extended period of time, but she decided to head to Kansas, Missouri, where she served as weekend anchor and a reporter.

She moved to Hartford, Connecticut in the early 80s and hadn’t looked back since. After years of delivering quality TV journalism on WFSB, she left and joined her friend again on her show.
