Smith began his career in broadcasting at KHOW and KIMN radio stations in Denver, Colorado, and from 1973 to 1981 at the WLW radio station in Cincinnati, Ohio. From 1981 to 1982, he worked for Denver’s public television station, KRMA-TV. Smith worked as a reporter and anchor for KMGH-TV, Denver’s then-CBS affiliate (the station is now affiliated with ABC), from 1982 to 1985. As a reporter, Smith joined CBS News in 1986 and was appointed a correspondent in 1987.

He was a contributor to The CBS Evening News with Dan Rather, 48 Hours, and CBS News documentaries for thirteen years. The majority of Smith’s time at CBS was spent anchoring the CBS morning show. From November 30, 1987, to June 14, 1996, he worked as a co-anchor of CBS This Morning.

He was featured on the CBS Evening News after leaving the show in a weekly segment called “Travels with Harry,” which looked at unique individuals and locations across the world.
