Ackerson joined the WBIR news team in November 2014 and she is happy to work for the station she watched as a little girl. She has called the Knoxville area home for most of her life and she is proud to return to her roots and to a place full of family and friends. Leslie has spent her high school years playing violin in the Knoxville Youth Symphony Orchestras besides being among the Dance and Track teams at Karns High School where she graduated in 2009. After graduation, she headed down south to Birmingham, Alabama. At Samford University, she earned her degree in Journalism and Mass Communications with a concentration in Broadcast and Public Relations. Her interest in movies and filmmaking led her to grab a film minor as well.
While balancing school, she was also a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority and a collegiate athlete for four years. As part of the University’s track and field team, she has a huge passion for exercise. When it was finally time to bid college farewell she decided to stay in Birmingham a little longer. There is 2013, she received her first job at CBS affiliate WIAT.
At WIAT Leslie fell into a number of positions. Starting off as a sports production assistant, she helped navigate the crazy weekends that consisted of Alabama and Auburn football. Soon after, she advanced to the role of assignment editor and then later Associate Producer. In October 2014, it was time to come home. Ackerson got married and made the move back to Big Orange country.
When she’s not reporting, she likes spending time with her wonderful husband, Bo. You can catch her working out at her Crossfit gym, reading a good novel, or enjoying the beautiful outdoor adventures the Smoky Mountains have to offer.
