This decision was part of a realignment of CTV National News to focus on an integrated and aligned strategy and to provide resources to journalists on all platforms. LaFlamme’s departure was also likely influenced by her higher-than-market-rate legacy contract and a libel lawsuit against CTV that caused Patrick Brown to resign as Ontario Progressive Conservative (PC) Party leader.
Bell Media claimed that LaFlamme was given the opportunity to say goodbye to the public on air but declined, and they offered her many options to return. However, former CTV colleagues described LaFlamme and senior producer Rosa Hwang as creating a toxic work environment.
LaFlamme’s termination also led to allegations of misogyny, sexism, and ageism, prompting Bell Media to initiate an independent workplace review. Some alleged that Melling made inappropriate comments about LaFlamme’s hair color, leading to the Canadian branch of Wendy’s and Dove Canada to express support for graying women.
