Timi Dakolo Idols West Africa | Career
Dakolo went to Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria, for an audition for the reality show Idols West Africa in 2006. More Than I by Commissioned and Time to Grow by Lemar were Dakolo’s favorites. He was considered a contender for the prize because the judges were impressed by his vocals.
Timi Dakolo never finished in the bottom three during the competition. The show’s producers made it clear that Timi received the most votes in each of the final three weeks of the competition.
Timi’s grandmother passed away during the competition, a week before the Top 24 performances were shown. He was dealt a severe emotional blow by this. He relied on his Christian faith at the time for strength to win the competition. Timi attended the University of Port Harcourt as a Communication Studies student prior to attending Idols West Africa. Timi Dakolo was shot in Port Harcourt’s Presidential Hotel on January 1, 2008, the day after he won Idol West Africa in 2007. He had gone to the hotel with his friends to go to a church service. Timi was not the target of the random violence that was carried out by a group of Niger Delta militants. Timi escaped with a flesh wound, was rushed to the hospital, treated, and discharged the same day, despite the fact that the attack resulted in the murder of a hotel security guard.
